Bringing Home Bailey: Adopting our Pre-Loved Dog

RATE: 30
Take out Trash, Get a Dog...just another item on the To-Do List
My 9-year-old son, Evan, had had enough.  He missed having a dog and took every opportunity to remind me.  Eventually, he figured out that for something to happen, it first needs to be on my To-Do list.

He didn’t realize that his father and I had already started looking for a new dog to join our family.  After our experience with Madame Cujo, the most important quality was that the dog be friendly.

After searching through hundreds of dogs online, I finally found the perfect dog:
“2-years-old...spayed female...intelligent...friendly...trustworthy...loves other dogs...non-aggressive...housebroken...obedience trained....gentle...loves children...well-mannered.”
Bailey was well-loved by her previous owner who did not want to give her up. A tendency to run away when the owner’s two-year-old son would randomly open the door along with the owner’s husband’s dislike of dog hair necessitated Bailey’s re-homing.

After competing with several other potential adopters, we were finally selected as Bailey’s new family.

We had to travel from one end of Pennsylvania to the other to get her.  My husband and older son could not make the trip, so my two younger sons and I embarked on Operation Bring Home Bailey.

Look at that face! I'd re-home the husband instead.

We met Bailey on Saturday so that she’d have a chance to meet us before being put in a strange car and taken to a strange home.  We stayed overnight at a hotel and then picked her up the next day to bring her home with us.

As soon as her dog bed was placed in my car, Bailey was ready to go.
Not my kid...he's the former owner's son

She laid down on her dog bed the entire 5-1/2 hour trip with only one stop at a rest area.

Everyone has to take a pee every now and then, even perfect dogs.

We’ve now had Bailey for three weeks and she’s adjusted very well.  Her days are filled with walks, meeting people, car rides, playing with kids and toys, bringing in the newspaper, and sleeping in her new favorite place:  the rug by our front door next to my office.
Bailey on her favorite rug near my office.

I took her to the vet for a check-up last week.  The vet loved how well-mannered and friendly she was and told me that only one in one hundred dogs are as nice as Bailey.  I’m not sure I agree.  I think it’s more like one in a million.

If it were up to me, I’d have re-homed the husband instead.

I got a great dog this time.

Sounds like you both hit the jackpot, Lisa. You soooo deserve this dog.
And I thought my little Lucy, who we rescued from the Dumb Friends League in Denver was the sweetest...but I'm biased of course! We also hit the jackpot with a lovely shelter dog...your Bailey is a real cutie!
Glad you got back in the saddle.
Whisper - I was just re-reading your comment from my last Shelby post tonight. Your words were so comforting. I'm so happy that you're here to share my good news!

yekdeli - Thank you! Bailey is exceeding my expectations in every way. Congrats on finding your own sweet dog, too. :)
BBE - Thanks. It feels great!
Awwwww.....I can't imagine giving up a dog with a face like that. I'm with you -- dump the husband instead.
I LOVE this, Lisa and I'm so happy that Bailey and your family have found much deserved love and happiness ever after. Giver her a big scritch for me. She's lovely!
No way would I ever have given that gorgeous dog away. She is a doll. Reminds me of Happy on Seventh Heaven (yes, it's true, I watched that sappy show and I liked it damnit).

She is so lucky to have you and your family. I can feel the love from here. Please share more pics and tails (sic) of her new life with you and yours.

This is welcome good news.
Perfect post as always. You and Bailey are two of my favourites here.
Laurel - As happy as I am, I keep feeling sorry for her former owner.

cartouche - Thank you! I feel very, very lucky to have found her.

Ablonde - Now I'm going to have to hunt for a video from Seventh Heaven on YouTube! Thanks for sharing my good news. :)

Emma - XOXO
It was obviously a match made in heaven! Congratulations to you all!!!
She is such a good girl........
What a cutie-pie! She looks right @home w/your family. Will she soon start posting on OS, too?
You can still re-home the husband. Congrats on a beautiful new addition to your family! I'm so happy for Bailey.
Oooh, that is a cute dog! Give her a scritch behind the ears from us please - my wife and I love dogs, but our jobs mean that we can't have one right now :-(
This beautiful, hopeful story warms my heart on this sad day of learning about Josie. You all are a wonderful match, and she is just adorable. Congratulations.
Looks like you struck gold with her! So glad she has joined your family and she is lucky to be with you and yours!
I agree with your last line. Just think if there were no-kill shelters for stupid husbands, LOL

(I thought she was cute before and she's still adorable! Especially that first picture. "I'm ready to go!")
LandP - Actually, all bets are off if she sees a rabbit. :) The Labrador Retriever part of her can't resist critters!

Hello - Jackpot indeed!

bluesurly - Thank you. It does feel to me as if everything lined up perfectly for her to be with us.

Gary - I think she might give your dog some competition for Greatest Dog in the World. :)

David - Nah, no time for posting on OS, what with playing catch, sniffing out critters, and taking all those walks.

Deborah - Thankfully, MY husband recognized a good dog when he saw one! I appreciate you sharing my good news.

Cymraeg - Baileys says thanks for the ear-scritches.

Lea - I am so sad about Josie, too. :(

Pamela - Thank you. We're happy to have found her.

Jen - I guess the husband didn't learn the way that I did that if you find a good dog, you treasure her.
oh god, i'm so happy for all of you!!! i love your son next to Bailey on the dog bed in the car!! she is adorable. i love that face. i beg to differ with you and the vet. there are many lovely and kind and affectionate dogs out there. i'm pack leader to two of them. i admire you all for taking the risk to re-dog after the previous fiasco. you all, but especially you, deserve all the canine-american love in the world!!! love love lvoe and gratitude for bailey the love dog.
"If it were up to me, I’d have re-homed the husband instead."

With this you left me nothing to say in my comment. Except I understand why was so ready to go.

This is the dog you deserve. Congratulations!
I meant I understand why Bailey was so ready to go.
She's beautiful. I hope you guys have so much more fun and love with her than with Madame. A dog really completes a home well.
Look at her eyes and damp nose... even the name is adorable... I´m so happy that you and family and Bailey can have a well deserved second chance, great!
Kisses.
I keep coming back here to look at her sweet, sweet face!

Hope you have a great holiday weekend playing with your new family member.
Teddy - The best part is that Bailey is not only friendly and affectionate, but she's very well-trained, too. She doesn't jump on people, doesn't bark except to let us know someone's at the door, walks well on a leash, knows all of the obedience commands, is great around other dogs, rides well in the car, and is calm and gentle in the house. I've never had a dog that was great in all of those areas. She feels like such a blessing, especially after how hard it was to have a dog like Shelby. I finally can enjoy having a dog again!
I am so happy for you and your family that you have found such a wonderful new friend! I can tell by the twinkle in her eye that there is something extra special about her.
ahh, see? I really needed to read this today :) Thank you Bailey! And shoe fly to the stupid husband... I mean, honestly....
nerd cred - Bwahaha! I should have figured out the reason why she jumped in the car so quickly. Thanks for the kind words. :)

Jess - Thanks! We're having a great time with her. She met more people tonight while out walking and she was so sweet to them. We're really enjoying her.

Marcela - I like how you phrased that: I guess we are each other's "second chance."

WalkAwayHappy - I love her face, too. She makes me smile. I like the idea that we've rescued each other. Thank you!

Ablonde - We've got a big weekend planned for her; we're taking her camping! Lots of people, lots of other dogs, lots of hiking. I think she'll love it.

mamoore - Thanks! I think she's extra-special too, but thought I was being biased. :)

Thank you, thank you everyone for stopping by to share our joy. Nothing can beat the companionship of a good dog. I'm so grateful that Bailey's owner chose us to adopt her. She's a perfect fit with our family. Even the energy in our home these days seems lighter and more positive, as if she were the missing piece. Hmm...maybe she was? :)
Caroline - I keep reading the tributes to Dakini Dancer and crying my eyes out, then I come back here and everyone's joy feels like a great big comforting hug. Thanks for sharing it with me.
YAY!!! I'm so happy for you, your family and Bailey.... She IS the dog you deserve and she deserves, you, too!!!! YAY!
Wits - Thanks! We just got home from a weekend camping and she was great there, too. (Man, oh man, are the ticks ever bad this year though!)
What a beautiful, adorable dog -- I'm so glad you found each other!
You are so blessed, and you and this absolute joy of a dog are going to provide each other with long-lived memories.
Marple - :)

Notes - Thanks! I love your term "joy of a dog." It's perfect!

Umbrella - I love thinking that she was running away to get to me. I have all kinds of stories about how the Universe totally lined up for me when it came to adopting Bailey. I think it was meant to be. :)
By the way, I'm thrilled to see you here. I know that your time is limited these days.
Adorable dog, Lisa. Even her pictures are friendly and loving. I've had dogs literally my entire life and can't imagine life without them.

I think Bailey is a very lucky dog indeed, to have found such a caring family to be adopted into. Good luck with her.
Bob - Thank you! I can't imagine life without a dog either. They enrich it so much.
Apparently I forgot to comment earlier. Bad me. I love her scruffiness. She looks like the kinda dog you want to take home. Congratulations to you and to her!
Mrs. M - She is wonderfully scruffy, isn't she? I'm thinking of clipping her down for the summer because the ticks have been horrible around here, but I worry she'll lose that sweet, approachable look. Thanks for stopping by to meet her!
Congratulations on your new family member :)
Good grief. HUNDREDS of ads? Driving across Pennsylvania? My parents would just go to the pound and pick up the first mutt they saw. I'm jealous.
Susan - Thank you. :)

Steve - Yeah, my parents used to do the same thing as your parents. Given my recent bad luck with dogs, I thought I should put some major effort into this one.
(I forgot to mention that I loved your post. It's sort of a given).
