101 Words: The Third

101 Words: The Third

RATE: 14

I’m late to the 101-Words party.  I’m such a groupie, though, that after reading and enjoying everyone else’s fabulous pieces, I just had to give it a try.  Here’s my offering:

I cursed the results of the amnio test.  With two boys already, I didn’t need a third.  This child, my last, was supposed to be a girl.
At birth, you nearly left us before arriving, the cord wrapped twice around your neck.  Spirits of ancestral women accompanied my strength, delivering you safe, whole, and alive into the world.

I named you Evan, meaning “warrior.”  You had to fight to be here.

My sweet rebel, you are my loveliest gift, my greatest hope, and my most brilliant joy.  Two boys, though wonderful, weren’t enough.  My heart needed you to be in it.

this is so moving! I'm holding my sick second boy... I'd love to have a girl, but three boys, eventually, would be divine!
In my family, all my kids thinks he or she is the favorite! I would tell my eldest daughter he is my favorite as she was our first-born. Likewise, I would then tell my youngest daughter that she is our favorite as she was our baby. As for my son, being the only boy, he is our favorite as he would carry on the family name.

On the bright side, you remain the favorite female in your family surrounded males who loves you! Maybe your family won't be able to stand another woman in a family... lol! Go for the fourth... and hope you get what you wished for...
Never too late, Lisa...loved this! And I bet your son will too, someday...great post...
Umbrella - Even though I longed for a girl, I do love my boys and can't imagine not having any of them. I had to laugh at thoughts of my husband being my slave in some countries. At least in the time of Henry VIII, I'd have gotten to keep my head!

MzEll - Thank you for the kind words. I hope your boy feels better soon.

station_next - I love that all of your kids think they are your favorite! Mine ask me, like kids do, but I give them the same, boring "I love you all equally". Your responses are much more imaginative, and I dare think, makes them all feel like they know the truth.

Donna - Unfortunately, it is too late for that girl. Hubby has been fixed and I am too old. I can hope for a granddaughter, though!
I had one of each but I so wanted more in general. Alas, it was not meant to be. Congratulations on having three.
Lisa - I wonder if that ever goes away, that longing for the children we didn't have? I suppose all we can do is treasure even more mightily the ones that we do have.
Well, made me cry...
My girl was born with the cord wrapped twice around her neck and once around her shoulder. Apgar of 0 to 1 but here and unharmed by her difficult beginning and my complete joy.
Man, oh, man, if we get into our birth stories...
o'stephanie - Birth stories always make me cry, too. You know, I never thought about Evan's Apgar score until I read your post. With my first, I was so concerned about it (it was 9) but with Evan, I never even asked. It's probably better that way! Glad that both of our children are doing well despite their harrowing debuts.
Lovely. I was praying for a second son and got my wish.

In your case, the Rolling Stones line applies, "You don't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need." Congratulations on having four wonderful men! Paws up.
Excellent post, Lisa. I love your reasoning for naming him.

Thumbed.
That made me tear up there.
I'm with Umbrella, nothing like mothers and sons. Or in my case, son, who I call my 'gift from god.' Beautiful story, Lisa, a treasure to add to the list.
DogWoman - Thank you! Who knew the Rolling Stones were so wise, but that's it exactly.

Bill - Thank you. It was a name we'd considered, but after his birth, it felt perfect.

odetteroulette - I'm sorry for the morning tears. I do appreciate you taking the time to read my words.

Sally - Thank you for your kind words. Children are gifts, aren't they?
Cherie - Thank you! :)
Goosebumps and teary eyed.
I just love your work. You make me feel it all. Sweet or funny always a treat. r.
This was a beautiful, loving tribute from mother to son. I loved it.
every word has its proper place, measured force, and significant meaning.
Wow! Thank you all for finding this one after all this time.

MB - I'm sure you've long given up on me, but I'm sorry that I missed your comment. :(

hugs, me - Wow, thank you! What a lovely compliment. You made my day.

Lunchlady - Thank you! And who is the darling baby in your photo? So cute!

dianaani - Such kind words. Thank you! I really appreciate you finding this piece and taking time to leave such a nice comment.
